The Practical Nails
I was sick of middle aged men at work asking me “How I could do anything with those nails?!” so I decided to create some ‘practical’ nails with the purpose of creating art.
Removing the stigma around having fake nails, a predominantly female art form, whilst acknowledging the history of cuticle culture. Wearing fake nails does not make you high maintenance or put you in a specific category, they can be tools. Flo-jo won olympic medals whilst wearing nail extensions. Being told “how can you do anything with those nails” reaffirms a negative connotation that was born out of racism and misogyny. I want to create a statement surrounding female hobbies and pastimes, such as having your nails done, and rebuke the statements about nail extensions being useless and purely for the conceited.
